The Belgian designer Walda Verbaenen explores the intersection between writing, language and communication in her designs. Her projects open up space around creative typography: she turns writing into language, language into communication and communication into participation.
In 2020, Walda Verbaenen received the Design Educates Award | Solarlux Choice in the Universal Design category for her Phonotype project. Phonotype is a typography that integrates the pronunciation of letters in their appearance. The goal is to make it easier to learn a language and its correct pronunciation – an important necessity for integration.

This year, Walda Verbaenen has been awarded “Gold” in the Universal Design category for her project “Braille Meets Emotions” – and we are delighted to be able to present her award in person at Architecture in the Foyer. In her current project, she developed emoticons for the Braille script, which is used by blind and partially sighted people. One challenge of doing so was the conversation of visual symbols into a non-visual script. In her presentation on 30th September, the Belgian designer will talk about this and other challenges, and about the role of design as a supportive force.

Much Untertrifaller

The latest project of the firm Dietrich | Untertrifaller, the public library in the Austrian town of Dornbirn, is currently receiving a great deal of attention in the specialist press and other media. We too were impressed by the educational building of the international architectural firm and have awarded it the Design Educates Award – Solarlux Choice in the Architectural Design category.

The building combines two passions of the architect Much Untertrifaller, who has made a name for himself with designs such as the Silvrettahaus, the Festspielhaus Bregenz and the Haus der Musik in Innsbruck.

One is the architecture of Vorarlberg, with its many striking residential buildings. The other is educational architecture, a mission that Untertrifaller has taken to heart, which has shed its dusty agenda in recent years and is now exploring new ways of learning together.
It will be our pleasure to let Much Untertrifaller speak for himself. On 1st October, he will give us a taste of his architectural philosophy based on selected projects.

Das jüngste Projekt des Büros Dietrich | Untertrifaller, die Bibliothek im österreichischen Dornbirn, erfährt aktuell u.a. in der Fachpresse große Aufmerksamkeit. Auch wir sind von dem Bildungsbau des international tätigen Architekturbüros begeistert und haben ihn mit dem Design Educates Award – Solarlux Choice in der Kategorie Architectural Design ausgezeichnet.
Der Bau verbindet zwei Leidenschaften des Architekten Much Untertrifaller, der mit Bauten wie dem Silvrettahaus, dem Festspielhaus Bregenz und dem Haus der Musik in Innsbruck Renommée erlangt hat: Zum einen die Vorarlberger Architektur mit seinen zahlreichen markanten Wohnbauten, zum anderen die insbesondere von ihm verinnerlichte Bauaufgabe Bildungsbau, die in den letzten Jahren ihr verstaubtes Programm abgelegt hat und heute neue Wege des gemeinsamen Lernens sucht.
Mit Freude lassen wir Much Untertrifaller selbst zu Wort kommen. Am 1. Oktober wird er uns anhand ausgewählter Objekte in seine Architekturphilosophie eintauchen lassen.

Kristina Bacht

As head of the AIT Architectural Salon, Kristina Bacht often assumes the role of host at events. On 30th September, she will switch roles and appear as the initiator of the Guga S’Thebe Children’s Theatre in Cape Town. The extraordinary project was awarded the Design Educates Award 2020 | Gold Prize in the Architectural Design category.
The multifunctional building is outstanding in multiple respects. It is located in Langa, the oldest township in Cape Town, South Africa. The theatre space serves as an extension of the existing Art and Culture Centre.

The community project was designed, planned and executed by universities on three continents – Africa, America and Europe. The entire building consists of eleven shipping containers. They form the walls of an open hall, which can accommodate 200 people. A roof of wooden trusses provides protection from the weather.
These are the cornerstones of the design. In her presentation, Kristina Bacht will share her personal impressions and pictures to tell the story of this heartening project.

Als Leiterin der AIT-Architektursalons übernimmt Kristina Bacht bei Veranstaltungen häufig die Rolle der Moderatorin. Am 30. September wechselt sie die Seiten und stellt als Initiatorin das Guga S’Thebe Children’s Theatre in Kapstadt vor. Das außergewöhnliche Projekt wurde mit dem Design Educates Award 2020 | Gold Price in der Kategorie Architectural Design ausgezeichnet. Außergewöhnlich ist das Multifunktionsgebäude gleich in mehrfacher Hinsicht. Es steht in Langa, dem ältesten Township in Kapstadt, Südafrika. Dort ergänzt es als Theaterraum das Kunst- und Kulturangebot.

Entworfen, geplant und errichtet wurde es als Gemeinschaftsprojekt von Universitäten aus drei Kontinenten – Afrika, Amerika und Europa. Das gesamte Gebäude besteht aus elf Überseecontainern. Sie formen Wände, die eine offene Halle für 200 Personen entstehen lassen. Ein Dach aus Holzfachwerkträgern schützt vor der Witterung. Soweit die Eckpunkte. In ihrem Vortrag wird Kristina Bacht diese mit persönlichen Eindrücken und
Bildern verbinden und so die Geschichte dieses ermutigenden Projekts erzählen.

When Armin Pedevilla talks about material, it stirs the emotions. He believes that materials are alive, and that architecture must give buildings the chance to age with dignity. Accordingly, the architecture of Pedevilla Architecture is known for its sensitive use of materials.

The selection, application and finishing of materials is always tied to the location and its history. This gives the architecture a certain sense of solidity and natural presence. If you are looking for large glass surfaces that open up the building and give it transparency, you won’t find them.

Despite this – or rather because of it – we are delighted to welcome Armin Pedevilla to share his architectural philosophy with us on 1st October.

Wenn Armin Pedevilla über Material spricht, wird es emotional. Dann geht es darum, dass Materialien leben und Architektur den Objekten die Chance geben muss, in Würde zu altern. Die Architektur von pedevilla architekten besticht demgemäß ganz durch einen sensiblen Umgang mit Materialität.
Die Auswahl, Anwendung und Verarbeitung der Materialien beziehen sich immer auf den Ort und seine Geschichte. Die Architektur erhält eine gewisse Massivität und selbstverständliche Präsenz. Große Glasflächen, die das Gebäude öffnen und ihm Transparenz verleihen, sucht man indes vergeblich.

Dennoch – oder gerade deswegen – freuen wir uns besonders, dass Armin Pedevilla am 1. Oktober uns seine Architekturphilosophie vermitteln wird.
